I learned about artist trading cards when I was teaching elementary school. I would explain to my students that they were these mini business cards for artists who wanted to show people what exactly they did as a maker.
For me they are the perfect warmup exercise before I break ground on larger work. It’s here I can focus on exploring color, mark making, and experimenting with techniques I may not have done when faced with an in progress canvas. This playtime is crucial to my painting practice to help me release energy and then bring focus back to my work. Each color study series I do I make sure to keep a few stashed in my sketchbook so I can refer back to the things I really loved and want to remember for future paintings. The rest I sell as affordable art or trade away.
